NSF Electrical and Communications Systems (ECS) Division
Workshop on Wireless Networked Sensor and Actuator Systems and Grantees Meeting

Date: September 8 and 9, 2003
Location: UCLA, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) room 4760 Boelter Hall.
Agenda | Grantee Poster Session | Workshop Results | Workshop Logistics | Maps And Directions | Accommodations

The Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) is pleased to host the First NSF Electrical Communications Systems (ECS) workshop on “Wireless Networked Sensor Systems”. This workshop is intended to engage Grantees of the ECS Division as well as other community representatives to explore the new ECS opportunities, develop a series of new program concepts, and ultimately create new research avenues on urgent ECS problems.

The workshop will be held on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) room 4760 Boelter Hall.

Grantee Poster Session

Grantees are encouraged to bring a poster to this meeting. This will be valuable for introducing our research to each other within this growing ECS community. The Poster Session will occur on the afternoon of Day One. Standard poster easels will be provided.

Workshop Results

The Workshop results will include a group White Paper, based on our Breakout Sessions, that will serve to provide guidance for future program development.

Workshop Logistics

The Workshop has been inspired by Dr. Vittal Rao, Program Director for Control, Networks, and Computational Intelligence (CNCI) of the NSF ECS Division. The Workshop Committee is composed of ECS grantees and is charged with the organization of this meeting.
The Committee is actively seeking suggestions for topics and augmentations of the topic descriptions included here. These suggestions will be critical for formulating the best Workshop program. Please do contact us with comments in this regard as soon as possible and preferably before August 15th.

The Committee includes:

  1. Dr. Vittal Rao, Program Director for Control, Networks, and Computational Intelligence (CNCI) of NSF ECS, vrao@nsf.gov
  2. William Kaiser, (Committee Chairman) UCLA, Electrical Engineering Department, kaiser@ee.ucla.edu
  3. Michael Lemmon, University of Notre Dame, Electrical Engineering Department, lemmon@nd.edu
  4. George Riley, Georgia Tech, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, riley@ece.gatech.edu
  5. Saibun Tjuatja, University of Texas at Arlington, Electrical Engineering Department, tjuatja@uta.edu

The Workshop Committee has also benefited from discussions with Professor Deborah Estrin, Director of the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) (www.cens.ucla.edu). We are indebted to the CENS staff for effort in organization. Also, the committee, as always, is in touch with a broad set of members of the wireless sensor research community. As noted, after reviewing agenda items, please contact the committee members with your inputs. We look forward to meeting with you!

Maps And Directions

From the 405 Freeway, take Wilshire Boulevard eastbound to Westwood Boulevard and turn left. Continue straight on Westwood Boulevard past the UCLA Medical Center until you reach the parking kiosk to your left on the UCLA campus. There will be a parking garage (Lot 9) on your right and Boelter Hall is to the northeast of Lot 9 and directly behind the Engineering IV Building which will also be to your right. You will park in lot 9 and signs will direct you from the parking garage to Boelter Hall.

Parking:

If you are attending from off-campus and need campus parking, please contact Stacy Robinson at (310) 206-2476 and tell her you need parking for “NSF ECS Workshop”. She will reserve parking for you in Lot #9 as discussed above. On the conference days, just drive to kiosk on Westwood Boulevard, tell the attendant that you are here for the NSF ECS Workshop, give them your name, and they will give you a parking pass and direct you to the lot 9 parking garage.

(If you have a UCLA blue parking permit, please display it for free parking in the garage. Only blue permit parkers are eligible for free parking at a non-assigned parking area. All other UCLA personnel must park in their assigned lot and walk to Boelter Hall. )
